This new 20 footer continues to impress, from consumers to industry experts, the performance is simply amazing. This time PowerBoat Magazine is enamored with this new compact machine. If you haven’t experienced the Wakesetter VTX in person yet, contact us to setup a demo.

(Merced, CA) Malibu Boats received a 6th consecutive Boat of the Year Award from PowerBoat Magazine on April 14th, in Sarasota, FL. The awards were selected after the magazine’s rigorous Performance Trials in Parker, AZ, Sarasota, FL, and San Diego, CA. More than 45 performance boats were evaluated independently by two teams.

This year’s PowerBoat Magazine Boat of the Year award was granted to Malibu Boats for the new 2007 Wakesetter VTX.

This honor makes Malibu the only boat company in the history of PowerBoat Magazine to have earned six Boat of the Year awards in a row. Paul Singer, Vice President of Sales and Marketing, accepted the award for Malibu Boats during the Product Excellence Celebration in Sarasota, FL.

Since its inception, the pride Malibu has taken in its products has netted recognition throughout the industry. All told, the company has accumulated 17 Boat of the Year Awards and 24 Product Excellence awards. Yet, the restless spirit and motivation for perfection never stops.

Singer explains this phenomenon, “I have said it before… These awards are a great pat on the back for us, but as soon as the congratulatory high fives are spent, we get right back at it. There are so many more innovations that our engineers are working to perfect. They are competitive by nature and these awards just push them to develop that next industry first.”

The 2007 award winners are profiled in Powerboat’s special June issue. To view the Performance Tests online visit PowerBoat Magazine™s.

We’ve been using the Wedge since late in 1998, but until recently, Malibu hasn’t patented this exclusive wake making device. That all changed on December 12th, 2006 when Malibu was awarded a US patent for the design of it’s unique Power Wedge wake enhancement and shaping tool. Thanks to this patent, we can ensure the Wedge will remain exclusive to Malibu boats for the immediate future.

While many said it couldn’t be done, Indmar said it could. And as the data confirms, they were right. We understand there is some apprehension towards the new EXT CAT system, but hopefully this article will help to dispel those thoughts. We’ll start with a quick overview of a CAT system, then relay some test data and stats gathered during testing of the new CAT system. At the bottom of this article is a link to an article printed in Boating Magazine. It is pretty informative and is written independently of Malibu or Indmar.

For those just tuning in (ETX= Extreme Tuned Exhaust, Get it?), let me explain what a catalyst is and its purpose in life. A catalyst is a substance that affects the rate of a chemical reaction, but does not get consumed by the reaction. That seems pretty straight forward, so we’ll define a catalytic converter. A catalytic converter is a chemical filter connected to the exhaust of an engine and designed to react with the fumes so as to reduce air pollution.

As you can imagine, this was not a simple “plug and play” application. Several other changes had to be made to allow this system to work. With the introduction of this system, the ETX manifolds were going to run warmer than they have in the past. To compensate for that, the flow of the cooling system has been rerouted to cool the added temperature of the exhaust manifolds. The CAT manifolds will run at temperatures less than 200F. As a precaution, Indmar recommends that you Let engine temp “normalize” before shutting down the motor, and run bilge blower both before start-up and after shutdown. Indmar also recommends you replace the impeller at least every other season.

The fuel system was also changed to a closed loop fuel system. A closed loop system uses oxygen sensors to adjust the fuel to match the air flow through the engine. By adjusting the fuel ratio using data collected from the oxygen sensor, fuel burn is more efficient with the catalyst left to burn the rest. At 4200 RPMs, the fuel system goes out of closed loop. What does this mean to you? Better fuel efficiency than the 2006 Monsoon with the EXT Manifolds. 6-10% better fuel efficiency to be exact.

What is the impact to the environment and to your family? A realized reduction in harmful exhaust emissions. Specifically, a reduction in Hydrocarbons (HC) and Oxides of Nitrogen (NOx) to less than 5 grams per KW-hr combined. The 2006 model lineup reported a 11.74 grams per KW-hr combined. Carbon Monoxide (CO) levels are also reduced to negligible levels. While there is currently no regulation for CO levels, the added safety should put Mom’s mind at ease when the kids are out wakesurfing.

Now let’s take a look at some performance data. Indmar took a motor installed in a boat with a conventional exhaust system and did some base line testing. Indmar then took that same engine in the same boat and converted it to use the new ETX CAT exhaust system. While a little over-propped in the first example, you can clearly see the performance data speaks for itself. Further below, you’ll see some more trials, performed in the same manner, but with a boat propped correctly. Sorry about the image quality.

Propped 4850 rpm – Peak Speed .02 mph FASTER
Acceleration:
0-20 mph: .45 seconds, 6.47 feet FASTER
0-30 mph: .35 seconds, 3.13 feet FASTER
0-200 feet: .28 seconds FASTER

Propped 5250 rpm – Peak Speed 1.29 mph FASTER
Acceleration:
0-20 mph: .41 seconds, 7.08 feet FASTER
0-30 mph: .82 seconds, 22.8 feet FASTER
0-200 feet: .37 seconds FASTER

To read more about the new ETX CAT Manifolds, check out an article in Boating Magazine found here.

Prior to 2004, driving performance was a quantity measured only in a direct drive boat. In 2004, Malibu introduced a new tracking fin that revolutionized the driving and performance experience for Malibu v-drive owners everywhere. That revolution? The Malibu Gorilla Fin.

As Malibu eloquently puts it, “Malibu’s Gorilla Fins enhance the handling stability and tracking capabilities of Sport-V configured boats. Larger surface areas and a more stable center pivot point increase the boat’s overall dynamics and provide direct drive maneuverability”.

So, what does this mean to you? Can you say “Bat Turns”? While taking a turn at break-neck speed and having the ability to toss your total passenger list to the floor of the boat is awesome, it goes far beyond a boat that feels like a Ferrari on the water. You now gain the ability to return to your rider in a sharp, controlled turn in the case of an emergency or to just plain avoid one. Add to that benefit list the vertical stability you would expect out of a boat with that kind of performance. As a rider loads the line and leans into their cut, the Gorilla Fins are digging into the water to keep the boat vertically “locked-in.” The lean normally experienced when a rider makes a strong cut to the outside is a feeling of the past.

So, whether your rider is pulling hard to the outside or you are pushing your Malibu through a tight turn, the Gorilla Fins help your boat maintain its vertical axis and provide the handling and stability you’ve come to expect from a Malibu.

And best of all, Gorilla Fins come standard on all V-Drive boats Malibu produces!

For 2007 Malibu introduced a new version of the manual Wedge to compliment the Power Wedge introduced in 2006. Not only is the new “floating” manual Wedge more convenient to use, it also improves the performance of the boat, and the quality of the wake. We’ve had a lot of questions about how the new Wedge works, so here’s a brief video we put together that details the functionality of the new manual Wedge.

Best of all, the newer Wedge can be retrofitted on any boat with an existing manual Wedge, although both a new bracket and the new foil will be required. If you use the Wedge most of the time, and especially if you wish you would have selected the Power Wedge option, the new floating style manual Wedge may be a worthwhile upgrade.

The latest project from two of the most notorious photographers in wakeboarding is now available to order. By teaming up, Joey Meddock and Josh Letchworth have created a fantastic medium for sharing the images they capture of our sport.

The Standerd, a quarterly photo journal chronicling wakeboarding and wakeskating, has announced that subscriptions and individual issues are now available at www.thestanderdquarterly.com. Founding photographers, Josh Letchworth and Joey Meddock are committed to evolving The Standerd into a prominent and widely-distributed piece of wake media.

Since the announcement of The Standerd on September 21, 2006, there has been a huge outpouring of support, and the requests for subscriptions have been consistently rising. “The Standerd is a reader supported publication so it’s really exciting to see such a great response. Our MySpace page and website have quickly taken off peeking interest from domestic and international locations. It feels great to start building up subscriptions a few months ahead of time.” Meddock said. He also added, “These early subscribers truly are a special ingredient of a new beginning and are contributing toward the history of our sport.”

Letchworth, Meddock, and many contributing photographers will begin shooting for The Standerd full time starting January 1st, 2007. Because the book corresponds with the calendar year, the first issue, as well as the full website launch, is expected April 1st 2007. The content will mostly consist of images and stories that were created within the previous three months. After one year, a subscriber will own four incredible issues completing the entire historic year in wakeboarding and wakeskating.

To create the best publication possible, advertising space in The Standerd is very limited. Because of those limits, The Standerd relies heavily on its subscribers. “Without the support from the wake community and all of our subscribers, this would not be possible,” says Letchworth. He continues, “The people out there who believe, understand, and share a similar passion for the sport like we do, are going to be the ones contributing toward the lifespan of The Standerd.”

Gift subscriptions and special promotions will run until January 1, 2007. For a limited-time only, a subscriber plus one friend can join for $60, saving 14% off the subscription price. The quarterly books will be available through water sports retailers, bookstores and online at www.thestanderdquarterly.com.

Last week Liquid Force Films and Oakley premiered the much anticipated Truth video at the Oakley Headquarters. A film put together by the one and only Justin Stephens. After watching Justin’s work in films like Project Watson, Running With Scissors, Asterisk, and Encore you can expect nothing less than perfection in his newest masterpiece The Truth.

This video covers sections by some of the best pro riders today. Shawn Watson, Shane Bonifay, Kevin Henshaw (2006 Rookie of the year), Ben Greenwood (2006 Alliance Wakeboarder of the Year), Keith Lyman, Phillip Soven, Tino Santori (2006 King of Wake), Nick Ennen, Aaron Reed, Danny Hampson, Melissa Marquardt, and Amber Wing! Crazy enough?… The list goes on! Undoubtedly Liquid Force has the most depth to any wakeboard team ever to come on the wakeboard scene! You don’t want to miss out on seeing the new tricks these guys have recently been throwing, and combined with the super slow motion shots from angles never before seen in a wakeboard film, makes for a must see video!

The Truth will be in stock at our pro shop sometime in December, just in time for the Holidays!

The Revolution Rack goes beyond typical forked board rack design with carbon fiber construction, easy operation, secure board storage and a sleek look. An OE exclusive design for Malibu Boats’ Illusion X Tower, the Revolution achieves superior board security with a patent-pending internal bungee system.

“We are constantly searching for technology that will make our boats better,” explained Dan Gasper, Head Engineer for Malibu Boats. “A board rack may seem like a small thing, but I believe anything that touches the boat should enhance its design and usability, not detract from it. The Revolution does just that.” Utilizing high compression carbon fiber mold technology from Fundamental Industries, the Revolution exudes advanced material memory along with a high strength to weight ratio.

This carbon fiber rack was engineered and lab tested for durability and vibration dampening, which exceeds present market offerings. The Revolution was subjected to a sheer load test, measured with a hydraulic ram and load cell. In total, the Revolution Rack was exposed to 100,000 cycles under load.

The Revolution houses four internally routed bungees. These elastic cords connect with rubber-lined board hooks which extend from the rack to grip a wakeboard or wake skate. This patent-pending system conceals unsightly bungees for a clean look and extends cord life. The inner bungee is completely protected from the effects of UV exposure, when retracted, and it can be easily replaced, if needed.

Fundamental Industries worked closely with the Malibu Boats Research and Development Center to integrate their technology with Malibu’s proven industrial design. The Revolution Rack, an OE exclusive to Malibu, is available through your nearest Malibu dealer as an accessory on the Illusion X Tower.

Fundamental Industries LLC is a collective group with more than 40 years of combined research and development experience in the sporting goods industry. Their goal is to push the envelope of design in the marine aftermarket industry through the use of high tech materials and dedicated development process.

For the last few years Malibu has been installing a customized version of Attwood’s NeatCleat on boats ordered with cleats from the factory. Compared to off the shelf cleats, the Malibu specific version has the Malibu logo laser-etched across the surface. While providing a custom Malibu touch when brand new, the laser etching would wear off over time from abrasion and use. Boats that are frequently stored under a cover were especially susceptible to loosing the logo quickly.

For 2007 Malibu has upgraded the factory cleats to a laser-engraved design that sets the Malibu logo down in the surface of the cleat. This newer design will never wear off or lose it’s finish.

These new Attwood cleats are available now on all 2007 Malibu’s and can be ordered for installation on any existing boat. Contact us if you would like to order a set.
